NSW Tick Plague
VETS are pooling paralysis tick drugs to cope with a shortage of antiserum.
Dog owners are being urged to take preventative measures as Sydney deals with a tick plague.
Acute shortages of the antiserum needed to save the lives of tick-affected dogs have forced many Sydney veterinarians to pool stocks at emergency veterinary clinics to ensure supply during the Christmas-New Year period.
Seaforth Veterinary Clinic principal partner Dr Terry Collins said he had came close to running out of antiserum because he had loaned supplies to emergency clinics.
"They're the ones who are going to see a lot more tick cases over the holidays, and they're going to need it," Dr Collins said.
Heavy rainfall across Australia in recent months has led to more than 1300 tick cases being reported. Vets have described it as the worst paralysis-tick season in decades.
Buddy, a cavalier king charles spaniel from Sydney's Northern Beaches, was at risk of dying after he was bitten by a paralysis tick.
"Buddy survived, but only because we were to able get him the antiserum quickly," Dr Collins said.
Australian Veterinary Association NSW president Dr Geoff Tomkins said that in recent months, many clinics had run low on antiserum.
"Demand this year has considerably outstripped supply," he said.
Antiserum wholesalers say a dry winter, followed by a wet summer, has made it difficult for suppliers to keep up with demand.

Firstly, hope everyone had a great Christmas. Just wanted to share a video of our fosters getting their presents on Christmas morning. So here's Squid, Nala, and Comet (and my own two Scrooge & Biscuit) getting some of their presents. Pepsi and Starr were sound asleep in their room so they got theirs laters!

Donate Items
If you're unable to make a monetary donation but would still like to contribute in some way, here's a list of things you might have lying around, that could really help the dogs in our care:
All of these things not only help the dogs but they help the foster carer.
None of us are made of money. But some of us are made of some old bedding, toys, leashes, etc. If you think you can help in any way, e-mail us.
- Bedding. Whether it be dog beds, sheets, blankets, towels... it's all needed.
- Toys. Whether it be a Kong, a dental bone, a tennis ball. Even some cuddly toys that your kid has now outgrown could be great for dog.
- A crate/carrier.
- Playpen. It doesn't even matter if it used to be for kids.
- Leash/Collar.
- Food. Full on bags of doggie dinner or just some treats. Can't buy them? Maybe you could bake your own?
- Baby Gates. Sometimes dogs need to be sectioned off from some areas of the house.
- Grooming Supplies. Shampoo/Conditioner, etc.
- Flea & Worming treatment. It's amazing how much we all go through when every single dog needs treatment coming out of the pound.
- Cleaning Products. This is more for the carers than the dogs but the costs can skyrocket after a while and it's something not often taken into account.
All of these things not only help the dogs but they help the foster carer.

Dog Gives Birth To 17 Puppies
A dog in Germany has given birth to 17 puppies, leaving their owner thrilled but fatigued after having to feed them with a bottle for several weeks because their mother couldn't cope with the demand.
Owner Ramona Wegemann said she barely slept for more than a couple of minutes without interruption during about four weeks in an "exhausting" struggle to make sure all of the purebred Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies would survive.
She said when she was "finished feeding the last puppy, the first was hungry again".
Wegemann's dog Etana gave birth to eight female and nine male puppies on September 28 in Ebereschenhof, which is near Berlin.
At least five times a day, Wegemann gave the dogs a bottle with special milk because their mother's nipples could never have coped with the demand, and when the puppies were not hungry, they wanted to be entertained, she said.
Wegemann said when dogs give birth to so many puppies several of them die within the first week. "But all of our puppies survived. This is incredible and wonderful," the 32-year-old added.
It was the second time that Etana gave birth. She gave birth to eight puppies in her first pregnancy, not uncommon for the dog's breed, Wegemann said.
"The birth of the puppies was very special. All puppies were born naturally, no caesarean was necessary," she added. It took Etana a full 26 hours to give birth to all of the puppies - and Wegemann was as baffled as amazed.
But caring for 17 puppies turned out to be a full-time job: Wegemann put her work as an independent animal psychiatrist on hold and her husband took as much holiday as he could.
Their lives have been turned upside down by the puppies, and their living room is now occupied by a giant box that houses the puppies.
But even Wegemann still struggles to recognize them: The females puppies are called Bahati, Binta, Bahya, Bashima, Batouuli, Binki, Bora, Bisa and the male ones are Baakir, Banjoku, Belay, Bruk, Bundu, Bayo, Bukekayo, Biton and Bulus.
Wegemann gave them all African names because the Rhodesian Ridgeback is an African hunting dog.

Kristine has managed her own two (human) physiotherapy clinics, has been treating animals for the last 9 years, & has just opened Sydney Animal Physiotherapy, the first animal physio clinic in Sydney. Kristine is a qualified yogateacher & pilates instructor, rides her horse, Goldie, in her (rare!) spare time, also loves to dance, in particular, rock and roll, jazz & belly dance.
All this is to say Kristine is passionate about exercise, movement & keeping one’s body healthy, strong & agile for as long as possible. her horse is 31 years old and still loves to canter, and one of Kristine’s favourite pictures is that of an 85 year old yoga devotee doing an extreme backbend.
Whether we are people or animals, we should continue to move well and happily, without discomfort, for most of our lives. This comes down to a healthy lifestyle, good diet and plenty of appropriate exercise. It also is dependent on attending to problems when they arise: so many people bring themselves in for treatment after they have had a problem for a long time; often people say of themselves (and their animals) “thought nothing could be done,” “it’s just old age” etc. The Eastern philosophy of having regular treatment while you are well, to stay well, is vastly different to our philosophy of putting up with a problem until we are no longer able to ignore it.

Doggie Photoshoot

So, today we took the opportunity to give Smudge and Squid their photoshoots for future calendars and photo cards, etc. They were both extremely well behaved and, as you can see, were clearly built to have their photos taken!

Renbury Farm Animal Shelter - Dogs In Need

Took a trip to Renbury Farm Animal Shelter today to pick up our newest addition (Comet) and took the opportunity to take some videos of some of the dogs there, who desperately need new homes. Unfortunately we were in a bit of a hurry, so we couldn't take the dogs out of the pens, and there are A LOT of dogs in need there.
This one is an incredibly cute Mastiff cross, only six months old. Such a beautiful boy, with a stunning colour, and friendly nature. He's going to grow up to be a big boy but who could resist that face?

Four Dogs Begin Their Adoption Trials
Some really good news for a few of our dogs in foster care today. Berkley, Tango, Holly, and Smudge have all found people that have fallen in love with them. Each of them will begin their adoption trials soon and, hopefully, will start their new lives with their very own families.So congrats to those four, who I'm sure will have an awesome Christmas this year. There's still some dogs available for adoption and, though they'll have fun this Christmas with their foster carers, it'd be even better to see them in their forever homes.

Why Squid Deserves A Home
Squid
I really should start out with what Squiddles Von Squiddlebutt (not his official name... don't panic) was like when we first rescued him. Constant jumping, crying whenever left alone, always needing attention. He really wasn't that unusual in that respect, a lot of dogs coming from the pound are the same, but with his energy levels, it was like a chipmunk on Red Bull.
He was rescued along with Titan. They hadn't met previously but soon became the best of pals, always playing, and were pretty inseperable. Titan had very bad anxiety issues and needed constant training - but Squid actually helped him in some respects too. Squidley (again, not his official name... sighs of relief all round) became a little bit of a babysitter for Titan. But then, Titan was adopted out, and poor little Squid was left on his Todd. He still had the other dogs for company but you could tell nobody really compared to Titan.

Sydney Pet Rescue and Adoption is attending the Meet the Rescue Dogs Day, at the Hardware and General Mona Vale (Darley st) this coming Saturday, 18th December from 9am.
The event intends to raise awareness about how wonderful rescue dogs are, especially larger dogs. It would be great if you could let anyone that lives ...around the area know, so they can come by and give the dogs a few cuddles.
Other dog rescue organisations will also be attending so it is a good opportunity to get involved and other groups.

Why Foster? - A Rambling Article
I've only been rescuing since February '10 but if there's two things I like to do most in the world, it's talking to random people and talking about fostering dogs. Inevitably, this leads to the question "Why do you foster dogs?" Or, to be more precise, it leads to the question "Who are you and why are you talking to me?"

So we've been thinking that Sydney Pet Rescue & Adoption really needs to step it up a notch with the merchandise in the new year. Obviously, the more we have to offer, the more money we will get to spend on all the dogs in our care. So with the help of Tanya (who took the photos), we've come up with these postcard prototypes. Just as a side note, two of these dogs have already found their forever homes!
